The OET Examination is commonly known as the Occupational English Test. It is specifically designed for health care professionals. It is a compulsory exam for the healthcare professional who wants to pursue a career in any of the countries among the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, Dubai, or Namibia.

This test checks the English proficiency skills of the healthcare professionals so that they can provide adequate service. The test can be taken by healthcare professionals such as Veterinary Science, Dentist, Medicine, Speech Pathology, Nursing, Occupational Therapist, Radiography, physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Dietetics, Optometry, and Podiatry.

Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust conducts the OET exam since 2013.

Eligibility

The OET exam can be taken by the health care professionals of 12 sectors. The sectors being Veterinary Science, Dentist, Medicine, Speech Pathology, Nursing, Occupational Therapist, Radiography, physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Dietetics, Optometry, and Podiatry.

The healthcare professionals who want to pursue a career in foreign countries such as UK, Australia, Ukraine, New Zealand, Dubai, Singapore, Namibia, etc., need to take up this exam compulsorily. The exam is specially designed for healthcare professionals making it an eligibility factor.

OET Registration

Aspiring candidates for the OET examination must register themselves through the official website of the Occupational English Test. The registration is done only via online mode.

OET Exam Fees

For successful completion of registration, the candidates need to pay the amount of 587 AUD as exam fees.

OET Exam Pattern

The exam pattern of OET is specially designed, keeping in mind the various aspects of language skills. The test consists of four parts, each of 45 minutes. The four sections as identified as Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each of these sections is further divided into parts that test in-depth knowledge of the candidate of the English language.

Exam Syllabus

The four sections of the OET exam have a detailed syllabus that can be pursued well.

Listening section

This section comprises 42 questions which are further divided into three parts. A candidate gets 45 minutes to answer this section. The test involves listening to a recorded speech and answering relevant questions about it in the given duration.

1.Part A

Here the candidates will be made to listen to two recorded audios that involve the healthcare patients and consultants. Listening to these two cases, the candidate will have to answer questions.

  1. Part B

This section tests the presence of mind of the healthcare professionals. The test consists of multiple short audio clips that involve various healthcare facilities and instructions. The candidates need to hear these carefully and answer the multiple-choice questions.

  1. Part C

The sections make the candidates hear multiple extracts from healthcare interviews, consultations, instructions, etc. The candidates need to understand the situations in the audio clip and answer the multiple-choice questions asked.

Reading Section

The reading section consists of 42 questions divided into three parts. The candidates are required to complete this round in 60 minutes. This section involves the compelling reading of passages and answering questions.

1.Part A

This task tests the expeditious reading skills of the candidates. The candidates are required to read four essays and consume specific details from the texts. The texts involve relevant information from the healthcare sector, and following this, the candidate has to answer relevant questions.

2.Part B

The second test involves the reading of various short texts related to general healthcare topics. The candidates are required to identify the potential information and use it to answer the multiple-choice questions. The reading text can include anything from hospital guidelines to reading prescriptions.

3.Part C

This section of careful reading requires the candidates to read extracts from sophisticated healthcare documents and understand them. Following understanding, the candidates will have to answer relevant questions asked.

Writing Section

This section tests the general writing skills of healthcare professionals in the field of their job. The candidates are required to write letters and applications in the specific area of their career and roles. A nurse might have to write a letter or application to the doctors or pharmacists as these are the nearest adjoining sectors with nursing. This section has a time duration of 45 minutes.

Speaking Section

This an attractive section where the candidates have to enact their job roles in a made-up scenario. Each candidate will be provided with 20 minutes to prepare, enact and conclude their job roles. The job roles assigned to each candidate is the exact same as the expertise in.

The candidates will be provided with enough background information to prepare for the role assigned to them. The roles are reversed after the first round. In the first round, the candidate acts as the same profession he/she aspires to be in. in the second round, the roles are reversed, and the candidate becomes the patient.

OET Preparation tips

The sole reason to take the OET test is to prove your English skills. Thus, you must prepare yourself by reading, writing and listening to English. While you prepare yourself, do not forget to keep in mind your common knowledge of professional expertise. There are several books available for the preparations of the test online and offline.

OET Results

The test results can be availed on the official website of OET after 16 days of giving the exam. You can identify your score on a scale of A to E. A being the highest and E being the lowest. OET scores are valid for 2 years.
