PTE is an English proficiency test which checks the speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills of candidates who aspire to study in an international university. In the 3 hours of the exam, candidates are required to answer around 130 questions and obtain a score on a scale of 10 – 90T

Types of PTE Exam

The full form of PTE stands for ‘Pearson Test of English’ and is categorized into three main exams:

  • PTE Academic (mostly taken by candidates): 
  • The PTE Academic exam is conducted all over the year for those candidates who have plans to study and get admission to an institution or university or move abroad. The Academic exam comprises four sections – writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Candidates are allowed to use the score of the PTE Academic exam for the next two years, as it is valid. The test will be evaluated using various accents from American and British to non-native speakers. 
  • PTE General:
  •  The exam under the PTE General category is always conducted three times in May, June, and December a year. The PTE General exam comprises two papers – a written paper and a spoken test. The PTE General’s exam scores are valid for a lifetime and are used to test the aspiring candidate’s realistic communication skills.

  • The PTE Young Learners is an interactive English language assessment exam for candidates/students aged 6 to 13. 

Exam Date:

PTE Exams are conducted throughout the year. Therefore, apply or register to appear for the PTE examination as soon as you are ready to give your English Proficiency test. Students can register for the PTE exam date by visiting their official website. Individuals need to be fully prepared for the test. PTE General Exam Registration Process:

Since there is no official website to send or submit your exam application for PTE General, it is recommended that one must get in touch with the customer care at Pearson Education Ltd.

PTE Academic Exam Registration Process:

  • PTE Academic registration for the exam can only be done via the online portal of PTE that lets you fill up and submit the application as well as submit the exam fee.
  • The candidate must visit the website of PTE Academic for booking their exam slot and paying the fee for the PTE Academic exam.
  • The Candidates are required to create a Pearson account. Provide all the required details. Get registered to the online portal.
  • The Candidates needs to sign in with their Pearson account details which will be sent to your preferred email within 48 hours.
  • The Candidates are allowed to schedule their test by choosing the individual preferred location to take on the exam and also by paying the fees for PTE Academic exam.
  • A confirmation email will be sent to your email address with all your PTE Academic exam details.

PTE General Exams are organized in two categories: Writing and Speaking.

The written test is further divided into Reading Comprehension, Writing and Listening. 

Based on six levels of assessment: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2, the scores are calculated for the PTE General Exam, which is based on the grading system of CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference).

To apply for being able to be accepted at ministries or universities abroad, individuals must acquire C1 or C2 level fluency. However, not all universities or ministries accept PTE General as their entrance exam requirement as this exam’s scope is only limited to real-life communication. But, for VISA purposes, the PTE General is not accepted.

Few ministries and universities of the further mentioned countries accept PTE General Score for their entrance exam requirement – Argentina, Czech Republic, Ecuador, UK, Estonia, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Colombia, Ukraine, Greece, Vietnam, Lithuania, Poland, Italy, and Latvia.

PTE Academic Exam Pattern:

The PTE Academic test is categorized into three parts:

  • Part 1: Speaking & Writing (Time Allotted: 77-93 minutes)
  • Part 2: Reading (Time Allotted: 32-40 minutes)
  • Part 3: Listening (Time Allotted: 45-57 minutes)

The PTE exam does not require a candidate to be an expert in English subject matters. This test is required to access or to make sure that the candidate can write, read, speak and listen to the International official language. The score obtained by the aspiring candidate in the Pearson Test of English assures a candidate that the individual would be successfully able to study in foreign institutions/universities.

Part 1: PTE Academic Speaking and Writing 

The time duration allotted for Speaking & Writing is 77-93 minutes. This section is divided into eight segments where candidates are tested on analysing and understanding the spoken and written English language. 

These include:

  • Describe image
  • Re-tell lecture
  • Personal introduction
  • Read aloud
  • Repeat sentence
  • Summarize written text
  • Essay (20 mins)
  • Answer short question

Part 2: Reading

The time duration allotted for the Reading section is 32-40 minutes. This section is divided into five parts where candidates ability to understand the written instructions in English are tested. The questions in reading comprehension consist of 300 words. 

The section comprises the following:

  • Reading & writing: Fill in the blanks
  • Reading: Fill in the blanks
  • Multiple-choice, choose a single answer
  • Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers
  • Re-order paragraphs

Part 3: Listening

The time duration allotted for the Listening section is 45-47 minutes. The reading section is divided into eight segments where candidates’ ability to understand the spoken English language is tested. The students need to retain the inputs and carefully hear the voice of what they have heard. The section comprises:

  • Summarize spoken text
  • Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers
  • Fill in the blanks
  • Highlight correct summary
  • Multiple-choice, choose a single answer
  • Select missing word
  • Highlight incorrect words
  • Write from dictation

PTE Exam Fees:

Presently, the fee for the exam is Rs. 13,700 (including GST). If any individual wants to reschedule the test, an extra amount shall be paid:

  • For rescheduling the PTE test date before seven days of the date booked or filling of form, a 25% additional fee requires to be incurred;
  • For rescheduling within the same week of the previously booked test date of the PTE test date, the full registration fee shall be incurred.

Mode of Payment: 

The PTE exam fee can be paid through Visa, American Express, MasterCard in Credit Cards. For debit cards, Visa and MasterCard are presently accepted.
